Sandals...

29 May

So today was necessarily a bit of a repeat of yesterday: drop the kids off, 10k, some speed and strength work, head home got on top of house stuff for an hour or two, run back up to the woods to pick them up from forest school, then handed kids to their nanny at 3pm so I could do some work in the afternoon.

Two things to focus on today - my third run this month in the sandals (Columbia hiking ones) felt comfortable, although I think I struggle with high speed work in them, they're good for slower running. I need to do much of the running this summer in them as I expect to do the long run in them. The big advantage they have over trainers is that as my feet swell in them there is no rubbing.

Also, noticed a massive difference between today's peanut butter sandwich and yesterday's pasta. In an effort to be vaguely scientific (emphasis on vaguely) I ate lunch at the same time and ran the same route (5k). I completely forgot to think about how I felt, it felt completely normal. It was probably fewer calories, and the bread may have a bigger bloat factor, but I think in the sandwiches vs. pasta battle, sandwiches win. It's also going to be more portable and straightforward on the day to have sandwiches than cold pasta. Found a great quote about ultra-running "it's an eating and drinking competition with a bit of exercise and scenery thrown in"!

My estimate for the calories burned on the big run is around 10,000. That's a lot of sandwiches!
